一般过去时表示过去某个时间发生的动作或存在的状态。
一般过去时的用法
1)在确定的过去时间里所发生的动作或存在的状态。
时间状语有：yesterday,last week,an hour ago,the other day,in 1982等。
Where did you go just now?
2)表示在过去一段时间内，经常性或习惯性的动作。
When I was a child,I often played football in the street.
一般过去时由动词的过去式表示，动词be有was,were两个过去式，was用于第一、三人称单数，were用于其他情况。下面我们一起来看一下其具体用法：
动词be(is,am,are)的过去式
原形     am  is  are
过去式  was  was  were
1)肯定句：主语+was/were+表语+其他。如：
He was in a bank a moment ago.
刚才他在银行。
They were at home last night.
昨晚他们在家。
2）否定句：在was/were 后直接加not即可变为否定句，即：主语+was/were+not+表语+其他。如：
Tom and Lily were not in the classroom just now.
韩梅和魏华刚才不在教室里。
注意：was not=wasn't
were not=weren't
3)一般疑问句：把was,were提到句首，句末用问号即可变为一般疑问句。即：
Was/Were+主语+表语+其他?
对一般疑问句的回答，其肯定形式用“Yes,主语（代词）+was/were."；其否定形式用"No,主语（代词）+wasn't/weren't."
-Was she late this morning?
她今天早上迟到了吗？
-Yes,she was./No,she wasn't.
是的，她迟到了。/不，她没迟到。
-Were they at your party last night?
昨晚他们在你的聚会上吗？
-Yes,they were./No,they weren't.
是的，他们在。/不，他们不在。
